Intended Audience: This course is intended for child welfare social workers and probation officers

Description of Course: All children have the right to an education that meets their needs. In this course trainees will become familiar with the laws that ensure educational rights of foster youth. Also, the trainee will understand their role and responsibilities in ensuring the foster youth’s educational needs are met. Educational resources will be provided from early childhood readiness to college prep and financial aid.

Intended Objectives:

• Recognize laws and policies associated with educational achievement
• Recognize their role as an advocate and case manager
• Explain the terms “educational surrogate” and “individual education plan”
• Recognize resources for school readiness for children who have experienced trauma
• Recognize requirements that impact high school graduation and access to higher education
• Recognize resources to assist current and former foster youth with post-secondary education

  IEP, AB490, AB 3632, Fostering Connections After 18 (AB12), AB167 exemption,
  Educational representatives and educational surrogates
  Federal Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA)
  Key Requirements for high school graduation and access to higher education
