Advanced SDM-Case Planning with the FSNA

Level: Advanced Practice – Lineworker, Supervisor

Credits: 3

Intended Audience: CI, FM, and FR workers and their supervisors or any workers responsible for developing case plans who have previously completed Interviewing for the Family Strengths and Needs Assessment (FSNA). Workers should bring the FSNA section of the SDM P&P manual.

Intended Objectives:

  • To explore ways to work with families toward collaborative case planning
  • To deepen understanding of the process of selecting priority needs
  • To learn how to use the case plan during contacts to focus activity with the family
  • To practice writing a case plan
  • To translate a case plan into action steps that guide every interaction with the family

Topics Include:

  • Walking through the elements of case planning
  • Explaining the purpose of a case plan to a family
  • Exploring how to motivate a family
  • Using the FSNA to create SMART objectives
  • Strategizing to help families meet those objectives
  • Documenting and monitoring progress

CalSWEC Competencies Addressed:

1.3 Trainee demonstrates the ability to conduct an ethnically and culturally sensitive assessment of a child and family and to develop an appropriate intervention plan.

1.5 Trainee understands the importance of a client’s primary language and supports its use in providing child welfare assessment and intervention services.

3.2 Trainee demonstrates the ability to perform a preliminary safety assessment and to monitor the safety of the child through ongoing assessment of risk

3.7 Trainee is able to gather, assess, and present pertinent information from interviews, case records, and collateral sources in evaluating an abuse or neglect allegation and making effective referrals for services or further evaluation.

4.4 Trainee demonstrates the ability to identify service/treatment plan requirements and to construct measurable objectives for the service plan.
