The Worker-Supervisor Formula for Applying Learning in the Field (Transfer of Learning)

Level: Advanced Practice – Supervisors

Credits: 6

Intended Audience: New and experienced supervisors who supervise and train staff who are interested in learning how to assist workers to transfer learning from the training classroom to the job

Intended Objectives:

  • Participants will define roles of supervisor and social workers as well as the relationship between both.
  • Participants will identify parallel process themes in casework discussion and classroom experience.
  • Participants will understand concept of “transfer of learning.”
  • Participants will define “support” and develop a plan to maintain this in their professional development.

Topics Include:

  • Transfer of Learning
  • The roles of the supervisors, workers and trainers in transfer of learning
  • Utilizing activities that support the transfer of learning from the classroom to the job
  • Parallel process for the supervisor and worker
  • Cultural considerations in transfer of learning

AHA Supervisor Competencies Addressed:

  • Participant will identify the stages of a social worker’s development and the needs that are a part of each stage, and be better able to implement strategies and take approaches that meet the needs of the staff the participant supervises.
  • Participant is better able to assess the training needs of the staff he/she supervises.
  • Participant will have an increased understanding of a variety of learning and problem solving styles and will demonstrate skills that help participant’s staff learn to do their job better.
