He also has completed his hours towards becoming a CADC, Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor. He attended his first Motivational Interviewing (MI) training in 2016.
From 1998 to 2014, Jorge worked presenting HIV prevention-focused educational workshops on reproductive health for adolescents through Friends In Deed, a Pragmatic Spiritual Crisis Counseling Center, and Love Heals, The Alison Gertz Foundation for AIDS Education both located in New York City. Through hundreds of workshops, he reached nearly 200,000 students.
Jorge also served on the Boards of Directors for Love Heals and STAP, Southern Tier AIDS
Program.
Since moving to San Diego in 2014, Jorge has worked for San Ysidro Health as a Health
Educator, HIV Tester, and Linkage to Care Coordinator. He is currently a Behavioral Health/HIV case manager working on a grant that prioritizes minority Black and Latino community members living with HIV. He helps HIV patients from these communities who have Substance Use Disorder and other co-occurring mental health disorders access behavioral health services.
MI is central to his work. Many HIV patients on his caseload are pre-contemplative about or ambivalent to change and consequently struggle with the effects of untreated mental health and substance use, causing problems with housing, personal relationships, and health.
Jorge also provides MI training for his department members as part of regular department
development sessions and is participates in an ongoing MI practice and learning community.
