Practices to Support the LA Core Practice Model Module 1: A Questioning Approach

Intended Audience:  This course is intended for social workers, supervisors and/or managers who have already taken the 3 day orientation to Strategies to Support the Core Practice Model

Description of Course:  The course provides an opportunity to develop skills that support engagement, cultural humility, and trauma informed approach to working with families by using appreciative inquiry and solution focused questions. Through this approach learners will be able to develop skills in assisting in helping families surface their underlying needs to help their children safe. Learners will also learn to apply these skills both within the context of a CFT as well as with every interaction with clients throughout the life of a case.

Intended Objectives:

  • Identify and craft solution focused questions including scaling, exception, coping, preferred future and position questions for engaging with families to get to underlying needs
  • Demonstrate use of appreciate inquiry through skills practice to support a questioning approach to plan with families around key case decisions
  • Identify and Plan Use of Strategies to support the Los Angeles Core Practice Model both within the context of a Child and Family Team and throughout the life of a case

Topics Include:

  • Using solution-focused questions, appreciative inquiry in discussions with families to facilitate change and getting to underlying needs
  • Using information from interviewing to support rigor and balance in assessing for safety and taking a long term view
  • Helping families and the agency use a shared language that supports child safety
