In February 2023, the Academy was excited to launch the Academy i3 Podcast! Each month, podcast host Charlie Rodnuson is speaking with professionals about different topics related to workforce development. While some conversations may relate specifically to child welfare, each episode is meant to be one that can challenge our perspective and transform the way we show up both professionally and personally. The debut episode featured Practice Coach Derrin Ford as he and Charlie discussed simulation as a training modality and a behind-the-scenes look at what facilitators are looking for. They discuss what engagement looks like and the value of trying on new techniques and questions in an environment where supportive feedback is provided. When facilitators, actors, and learners are willing to be vulnerable with one another, the learning that takes place can be truly transformational.

The second episode focuses on the topic of recognizing bias with Ellen Perez, a fellow Practice Coach. Ellen and Charlie talk about the importance of understanding what factors push our “buttons” and cause us to react in a way that may not be in the best interest of the individuals served. Ellen shares how biases can impact everything from the progress a family takes toward reunification to organizational DEI efforts, and how recognizing them is a sign of personal and professional growth.
