Learn more about Brett:

When did you join the Academy, and what was your position when you first joined?
I joined the Academy in November of 2020 as a Student Technical Writer.

How has working at the Academy revolutionized your career and/or your life?
Since joining the Academy, I quickly realized how much time and practice management enables you to have a work/life balance. I’m incredibly thankful to be working with an organization that’s changing hearts and minds in social services throughout Southern California. When I graduated from SDSU with a B.A. in Communication, I never expected to enter the IT field, but I haven’t looked back and that’s thanks to the encouragement from my team members, staff, and mentors.

What is your favorite part of the job?
My favorite part of the job is creating innovative ways to support staff. From purchasing equipment and software to deploying and maintaining computers. I enjoy connecting with staff and working through technical problems, which is often a two-way street where communication and patience are paramount. Being able to critically think and reduce what the issue might be is a fun puzzle that I do every day. I’m also really fortunate to be a part of SDSU’s OneIT community where all of SDSU’s IT can work cohesively in one space, regardless of title.

What is a fun fact we should know about you?
I started surfing 15 years ago, which is now over half my lifespan. I find it incredibly meditative and challenging to read the ocean and perform, you earn her respect. I love to train in endurance sports whether it’s a triathlon, swimming, road running races, or long bike rides.

What are your StrengthsFinder Top 5?
My top five strengths are Communication, Empathy, Futuristic, Developer, and Woo.
