Susan Writer, PHD
Susan Writer has her doctorate in clinical psychology from Alliant International University. She works as a Community Outreach Liaison for Aurora Behavioral Health Care, an acute in-patient psychiatric hospital in San Diego that treats children, adolescents, adults and seniors struggling with acute mental illness and substance abuse. She also sits on the Board of Directors for the Community Alliance for Healthy Minds; and has a private therapy practice with Home-Based Effective Living Professionals (HELP).
Dr. Writer has expertise in mood and anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, simple and complex trauma, cutting and self-injurious behavior, suicide, sexual identity and development across the lifespan, sexual orientation, substance abuse, gender transition, sexual minority communities (“kink” and “poly”), phase of life issues, grief and loss, couples therapy and intimacy issues, self-esteem and identity development, end of life issues, and late-life cognitive disorders. She has specialized training in working with adolescents, older adults (geriatrics), addiction, and sexuality & gender.
Through her clinical and outreach work and her collaborative connections in the community, Dr. Writer has become an expert in crisis intervention, working with families to help them navigate the complex mental health and substance abuse treatment systems, developing resources across different sectors of the community, and doing education and outreach in the areas of prevention and early intervention and self-care. She also consults for residential treatment facilities on making them safer for LGBTQIA residents, trains and provides consultation for mental health professionals, and guest lectures at Universities.
