Trainer Biography

Brent Crandal, PhD

Brent Crandal, PhD, is a child and family psychologist, researcher, and administrator at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego. He has be fortunate to offer evidence-based treatment to children, youth, and families in outpatient, inpatient, pediatric, military, and community mental health settings and co-authored the book Modular CBT for Children and Adolescents with Depression: A Clinician’s Guide to Individualized Treatment. His research can be found a several peer-reviewed academic journals, focusing on measurement, trauma-informed care, and system-level change. He has enjoyed teaching undergraduate psychology courses at the University of San Diego. As an administrator, Dr. Crandal manages the Office of Evidence-Based Quality Improvement for Rady Children’s Hospital Behavioral Health Services, to bolster the evidence-based clinical services provided by the department.

Dr. Crandal co-directs the Advancing California’s Trauma-Informed Systems (ACTS) Initiative in partnership with California’s Department of Social Services, Office of Child Abuse Prevention, to help child-serving systems become increasingly responsive to the needs of those impacted by childhood traumatic stress. He has been fortunate to train and present internationally on topics such as collaboration across child welfare and behavioral health systems, advancing trauma-informed care, client engagement in social services. He geeks out when presenting on the intersection of behavioral health and Pop Culture at Wonder-Con and Comic-Con.

He has contributed to workgroups and advisory boards for the National Childhood Traumatic Stress Network, California Department of Social Services, California Department of Health Care Services, and Alliance for HOPE International National Family Justice Center Polyvictimization Initiative. In partnership with the El Salvador Ministry of Education, he has been part of the team promoting evidence-based and evidence-informed school-based services for children in El Salvador. He is also on the Board of Directors for Guajome Park Academy. Ulitmately, Dr. Crandal is fulfilled and continually inspired as he works alongside individuals and communities committed to supporting and strengthening children and families in need.
