Social and Emotional Intelligence for Adult Protective Services Institute

What does it look like when over 70 leaders across Southern California in Adult Protective Services (APS) choose to invest in self-awareness and emotional intelligence? It looks like stronger teams, better communication, and more effective support for communities.

On April 29, the APS  Leaders Institute, part of the Adult Protective Services Workforce Innovations program (APSWI), launched the first session of its two-part Social and Emotional Intelligence Workshop for Leaders, facilitated by Sayori Baldwin. The workshop brought together APS leaders from counties across Southern California to reflect on their leadership styles and gain practical strategies for navigating the interpersonal and emotional demands of public service.

APS Leaders Institute workshops are designed to meet the evolving needs of APS and Adult Services leaders. By asking partners for input and including them in the planning process, we ensure that our workshops are relevant and impactful. Leaders face many challenges and have little opportunity to focus on their professional development. Our workshops provide that opportunity, helping leaders to enhance their skills and better support their teams and communities.

Leaders Institute workshops are held quarterly on a variety of topics to support APS managers and county leaders in Adult Services, with responsibility for elder justice programs more broadly. The Social and Emotional Intelligence Workshop for Leaders is designed to equip APS professionals with essential leadership skills, responding to the growing need for training and support in this area. This workshop delves into the intricacies of social and emotional intelligence, providing leaders with the tools to enhance their interactions and relationships within their teams and communities.

Participants walked away with tools they could use immediately:

  • 79% said they would definitely apply what they learned.
  • 70% said the training motivated them to take action.

They told us how they’re planning to:

  • Strengthen team dynamics with practical tools.
  •  Tailor support for staff during onboarding and transitions.
  •  Engage other supervisors and community partners with renewed confidence
  • Integrate emotional intelligence into cross-functional work and training efforts.
  • Lead with greater self-awareness—professionally and personally.

One participant shared: “This was a great introduction—looking forward to part 2. Especially appreciated the life examples.”

The APS Leaders Institute remains committed to delivering timely, relevant, and collaborative learning experiences that support the evolving needs of APS professionals. And this workshop is only the beginning. Part two of the series will continue this journey—further equipping leaders to lead with purpose, presence, and people in mind.

Because when leaders thrive, so do the teams and communities they serve. This is a strong example of how strategic leadership development pays off.
