Black History Month and Cultural Responsiveness

Black History Month marks a time where as a nation we acknowledge the achievements and reflect on the central role of Black/African-American people in the history of the United States and the world.  Deepening our understanding of others cultures as well as your own is central to culturally responsive practice.  Culture and experience, both personal and historical, impact decision making.  Exposure to new information about our own culture as well as the culture of others allows for the exploration of why those decisions were made.  In this month, take the time to take advantage of various resources such as podcasts, articles, museums, or documentaries that examine the contributions of Black/African American people throughout history and provide insight on their experience.  Through incorporating this knowledge you move further on your journey as a lifelong learner in culturally responsive practice.
