Coaching for LADCFS Mentors

Intended Audience: Individuals identified as mentors for new Child Social Workers coming out of Common Core for LA DCFS
Description of Course: Coaching for Mentors is a 3-hour course for those individuals who have been identified as mentors for new Child Social Workers coming out of Common Core for Los Angeles DCFS. This is an in person foundational training with lecture, group discussion and interactive skills-based activities to review the use and value of coaching when developing and supporting critical thinking and skill development. This course will also differentiate between the differences between a Mentor and Supervisor and how coaching fits within both roles while adhering to clear professional and ethical boundaries.
Intended Objectives:
- Participants will recognize common characteristics of effective coaching
- Participants will be able to define the difference of coaching, mentoring and supervision
- Participants will be able to identify various types of coaching skills including contracting listening exploring action and reflection
Topics Include:
- Solution Focused and Appreciative Inquiry Questions
- How to support the development of individual learning goals
- Reflective Listening Skills used in the classroom
- How to provide feedback that elicits self-reflection
- How support the development of individual learning goals
