Advanced Physical Abuse and Neglect for Child Welfare Workers

Level: Advanced Practice – Lineworker

Credits: 6

Intended Audience: This training is intended for child welfare professionals who have completed the Core class on Identification of Child Maltreatment-1 and investigate allegations of physical abuse and/or neglect

Intended Objectives:

  • The trainee will accurately identify factors that constitute abuse and/or neglect as defined by the Welfare and Institutions Code Section 300 (a)-(j).
  • The trainee will distinguish scenarios and photographs of child maltreatment from those that are not child maltreatment based on a number of factors including medical information, within a cultural context.
  • The trainee will value the importance of working collaboratively with medical personnel in coming to a determination of the likelihood of child maltreatment.
  • The trainee will recognize and value the need for child abuse and neglect expertise in medical professionals evaluating possible injuries and neglect in coming to accurate conclusions as to whether or not child maltreatment has occurred.

Topics Include:

  • Concepts common to the evaluation of all injuries
  • Steps/stages in the medical evaluation process
  • Collaboration between medical personnel and child abuse investigator
  • Identification and Evaluation of cutaneous injuries, fractures, burns, abdominal, thoracic and head injuries
  • Identification and Evaluation of medical child neglect and failure to thrive
  • Identification of Munchausen by Proxy/ Pediatric Condition Falsification

1.6 Student understands the influence and value of traditional, culturally based childrearing practices and uses this knowledge in working with families.
