Stipend Recipient's Biography
Marissa is currently in her second year of the two-year Masters of Social Work program and am a recipient of the HRSA GWEP Alzheimer’s MSW Stipend for 2016-2017. She has always had an innate love for the elderly. Growing up, she assisted with the care of her live-in grandmother and later provided care again for elderly patients in assisted living communities. These experiences solidified her desire to work with the aging population.
For her field placement last year, Marissa interned at Serving Seniors, which is an organization that provides services and assistance to low-income seniors. At this placement, she provided case management to the residents at one of their housing facilities. Over the summer, she did a Social Work Internship in Thailand at Ban Bang Khae Social Welfare Development Center for Older Persons, the first senior residential facility in Thailand. This year, her field placement is at LightBridge Hospice where she does home visits with patients, providing support for them and their loved ones. Many of the patients that she interacts with have varying levels of Alzheimer’s. She is really looking forward to the experience and deeper understanding she will gain while interning with this population at LightBridge Hospice.
