Successful Teaming with Teens

Level: Advanced –Lineworkers and Supervisors

Credits: 6

Intended Audience: This training is intended for line workers working with teens and their families, and supervisors of line workers who assist and support workers in working with teens and their families

Intended Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to indentify two shifting perspectives in the field which assist in building better partnerships with teens.
  • Participants will be able to identify several skills that will assist them in enhancing their relationships with teens.
  • Participants will be able to list several skills that teens say they want to develop.
  • Participants will be able to describe “youth voice” and several techniques to assist in gaining more teen participation.

Topics Include:

  • Identifying cultural, ethnic, socio-economic and generational differences.
  • Addressing needs and challenges for teens.
  • How to progress from client to partnership.
  • How to identify your style in working with teens.
  • Learn helpful relationship behaviors and skills.
  • The relationship requirements of teaming with teens.

1.1 Student demonstrates respect, fairness, and cultural competence in assessing, working with, and making service decisions regarding clients of diverse backgrounds.

2.5 Student demonstrates the ability to collaborate with individuals, groups, community-based and government agencies to advocate for equitable access to culturally competent resources and services.

3.10 Student understands how attachments, separation, and placements affect a child and family and how these experiences may influence a child’s physical, cognitive, social and emotional development.

4.3 Student works collaboratively with biological families, foster families, and kin networks, involving them in assessment and planning and helping them access services and develop coping strategies.
