Cultural Humility and Connectivity

Level:              Advanced Practice

Credits:           6

Intended Audience: Child Welfare Services Social Workers, Child Welfare Services Supervising Social Workers, and Child Welfare Services managers and administrative staff.

Description of Course: The participants will be provided an experiential training as they navigate various activities bridging the concepts of culture, communication, conflict resolutions skills and restorative principles. During class discussion, hands on application, and sensory exercises information on historical views of culture and how the use conflict communication styles impact resolving conflict.  Trainees will explore how various forms of trauma impacts African American communities and how that connection looks in relationship to  child abuse and neglect.

Intended Objectives:

  • Explore how cultural implications can impact services delivered.
  • Identify and practice tools for communicating through conflicts that arise from differences in culture.
  • Define and analyze how historical and cultural trauma intersect.
  • List 3 or more ways CWS workers can apply best practices in their professional approach to African American communities.
  • Identify how restorative practices can be used to improve working environments and relationships.
