Coaching Skills for LA DCFS Mentors

Intended Audiences: Mentors assigned by LA DCFS Regional Managers

Credits: 3 hours

Course Description:

Coaching for Mentors is a 3 hour course for those individuals who have been identified as mentors for new Child Social Workers coming out of Common Core for Los Angeles DCFS.  This is an in person foundational training with lecture, group discussion and interactive skills based activities to review the use and value of coaching when developing and supporting critical thinking and skill development. This course will also differentiate between the differences between a Mentor and Supervisor and how coaching fits within both of these roles but clear professional and ethical boundaries must be adhered to for effective coaching.

Learning Objectives

Knowledge

K1 Participants will recognize common characteristics of effective coaching

K2 Participants will be able to define the difference of coaching, mentoring and supervision

K3 Participants will be able to identify various types of coaching skills including contracting listening exploring action and reflection

Skills

S1 Participants will be able to formulate Solution Focused and Appreciative Inquiry Questions

S2 Participants will be able to demonstrate Reflective Listening Skills in the classroom

S3 Participants will be able to demonstrate providing feedback that elicit self reflection

S4 Participants will be able to support the development of individual learning goals
