Intended Audience: Course is intended for partners including Parents and Youth mentors who work with families in the Child Welfare System

Description of Course: Course will address code of ethics and expectations related to professionalism and boundaries for parent and youth mentors

Intended Objectives:

• Trainees will become familiarized with County P&P’s related to code of ethics in their role as parent/youth mentors
• The trainee will recognize the difference between enabling vs. empowering clients in their role as parent/youth mentors
• Trainees will recognize interactions between culture, poverty, gender, immigration status and substance abuse in the context of child welfare practice
• Trainees will be able to recognize support services to assist families in the Child Welfare System

Topics Include:

• Parent/Youth Mentor Code of Ethics
• Maintaining professional boundaries and relationships with families in the Child Welfare System
• Using Motivational Interviewing skills to enhance engagement
• Understanding emotional triggers which could impact effectiveness with families in the in the Child Welfare System
• Interacting effectively with all levels of Child Welfare staff, community partners and outside professionals
