CRA: AFRICAN AMERICAN EXPERIENCE & WORLDVIEW

Level:           Core/Advanced Practice – (Social Worker, Supervisor, Manager)

Credits:        6

Intended Audience:  CWS Managers, Protective Services Supervisor, Senior Protective Services Workers, Protective Services Workers, Social Workers 1 – 3, and Administrative Staff

Description of Course: This training will provide  participants with an experiential learning opportunity designed to raise awareness and cultural sensitivity to implicit biases and stereotypes that impact African Americans and their cultural worldview. Learning modalities will include, video and audio presentations, Liberating Structure (microstructures), role play, and completion of a cultural genogram.

Intended Objectives:

  • List 4 or more cultural experiences and challenges unique to African Americans (families, mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, multigenerational family units)
  • Identify 3 or more examples of systemic implicit bias as it presents in the child welfare setting
  • Describe and apply 3 or more examples of cultural humility
  • Create a cultural genogram and use it to compare and contrast cultural differences within common ethnicities
  • Discuss and demonstrate understanding of white privilege and cultural appropriation
  • Demonstrate self-reflection about the impact of personal experience and/or stereotypical views on professional practices and identify two or more action planning tools and language structures to help improve cultural responsiveness

  • Race Identity: The Progression from ‘Colored’ to ‘African American’
  • North of the 8, South of 8: Geographical Segregation in San Diego
  • Religion and the African American Church
  • The Impact of Poverty
  • The Criminal Justice System
  • White Privilege and Cultural Appropriation
