TRANSGENDER 101: CULTURAL RESPONSIVENESS WHILE SERVING LGBTQ+ YOUTH
Level: Advanced Practice – (Lineworkers, Supervisors, Managers)
Credits: 6 hours
Intended Audience: This course is intended for social workers, supervisors, managers, community partners, law enforcement and mental health professionals
Description of Course: This training will engage participants in understanding Sexual Orientation Gender Identity and Expression (SOGIE). Luck P. Luckey will share his/her personal story and experiences as a vehicle for deeper understanding of these issues
Intended Objectives:
- Ability to distinguish between sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and related LGBTQ terms
- Recognition of the impact of accepting and rejecting behaviors on LGBTQ youth
- Awareness of preventing bias from becoming barriers
- Capacity to reframe the “coming out process” for LGBTQ youth, their families and their environments as “letting in”
- Opportunity to demonstrate best practice to determine preferred name and pronouns when interviewing LGBTQ
Topics Include:
- Participants will be introduced to terms and concepts associated with the LGBTQ+ community to increase their ability to engage with children and youth
- Trainees will have the opportunity to ‘try on’ best practice when interviewing LGBTQ children and youth to determine preferred name and pronouns
- Solution focused inquiry techniques will be offered as a strategy to help children and youth feel safe and connected while partnering with their worker in assessing for safety and danger, as well as goal setting
- Trainees will explore how to prevent internalized biases from becoming barriers when working with LGBTQ+ children and youth, and the impact of transphobia
