Celebrating Connection, Growth, and Leadership

January 2025 marked the launch of the 19th cohort of the Leaders In Action (LIA) executive development program. This is an experience that cultivates leadership, cross-county collaboration, and systems thinking for mid-level managers and directors across human services. Over the course of five months, 30 dedicated professionals from eight Southern California counties came together to grow, reflect, and lead with purpose.

Representing the full spectrum of human services from child welfare and behavioral health to self-sufficiency, fiscal strategy, and legal affairs, this cohort brought with them a rich diversity of thought, discipline, and lived leadership. We were especially honored to include a Chief Financial Officer and a public-sector attorney this year, both of whom contributed valuable insights to our collective learning environment.

Connection has always been the heartbeat of LIA, and this year was no different. Participants frequently highlighted the depth of value found in peer-to-peer collaboration, shared problem-solving, and cross-county dialogue. What began as networking quickly evolved into a sense of solidarity—fueled by intentional opportunities like a leadership luncheon with current and former county directors, and our monthly cross-county dinners, which many described as both grounding and energizing.

This year, we also welcomed two new Executive Coaches both former public sector leaders whose lived experience added depth and relevance to the support our participants received. Alongside our two returning Academy coaches, they created a coaching team that held space for honest reflection and actionable growth, especially as participants navigated the complexities of leading in today’s evolving landscape.

Throughout the cohort’s journey, participants engaged deeply with a well-curated curriculum designed to nurture both skill and self-awareness. The Strategic Leadership course once again stood out for its practical relevance and inspiring delivery. The Culturally Responsive Leadership course also struck a powerful chord sparking reflection, dialogue, and renewed commitment to equity-centered leadership.

What emerged from this experience was more than professional development, it was a leadership community rooted in trust, courage, and psychological safety. Participants described feeling truly seen and supported, which allowed them to take meaningful risks, stretch their capacity, and step into their power both personally and professionally.

As Cohort 19 prepares to complete their journey this May, we celebrate not only their accomplishments, but their growth. This group of leaders is stepping forward with greater confidence, clarity, and connection and we are honored to have been part of their path.
