STAR INTERDISCIPLINARY TRAINING

“It is clear that careful, intentional work is required to ensure that youth
make the transition to adulthood successfully.”

STAR Project Abstract, 2000.

As a part of the Academy for Professional Excellence, a project of the San Diego State School of Social Work,
STAR Interdisciplinary Training was designed to impact practice and policy in child welfare,
leading ultimately to improved outcomes for youth exiting foster care.

STAR Interdisciplinary Training is comprehensive and competency-based. The Training incorporates the principles
of adult learning theory and is designed to be delivered using visual, auditory, and kinesthetic modalities.

The intended training participant group includes: social workers, foster/kinship parents, educators, juvenile court,
employment services, probation, group home and private/non-profit staff and other involved in preparing foster youth for adulthood.

STAR Interdisciplinary Training has been effectively delivered to hundreds of interdisciplinary personnel.
Here is what some of our training participants are saying:

“STAR is the most comprehensive and accessible training that
I have come across.”

-Rhonda Neumann, Director, Ventura College Foster
& Kinship Care Education

“During my six year tenure as ILP Coordinator, I have not attended a more practical and informative training…
I feel strongly that STAR is the best training available to those who work in the area of emancipation readiness for foster youth.”

-Eric James, Coordinator, Butte County ILP

“San Bernardino County has benefited from the STAR Training offered by the Academy for Professional Excellence last year.
Some of the benefits have included more youth participation in planning activities and the ILP Task Force.
The County has also collaborated with other surrounding Southern Counties on ILP issues and concerns to ensure that
ILP youth receive necessary services and skills.”

-Mary Goldberg, ACSW, Child Welfare Services Manager,
San Bernardino County Department of Children’s Services
