Overcoming Barriers to the Treatment of Latinos with Mental Illness (Fall 2004)
Keynote: Dr. Alex Kopelowicz (medical director of the San Fernando Mental Health Center and Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California, Los Angeles engaged in landmark research focused on Latinos with schizophrenia)
Addressed barriers to mental health service utilization in the Latino population. Despite the fact that Latinos have a similar prevalence rate for mental disorders as the general population, several studies have documented that they have a lower utilization rate of mental health services. Research on the underutilization of mental health services by Latinos has focused on the barriers to accessing ongoing psychiatric treatment -- with most of the attention given to financial barriers. However, growing literature points to the need to consider nonfinancial barriers to mental health care such as cultural factors and provider sensitivity. These issues were reviewed and an intervention designed to improve access to treatment was discussed.
