The Summit:

The Summit
of Tribal and non-Tribal Managers and Supervisors to Increase Positive Outcomes for Tribal Foster Youth was conducted on Wednesday, March 23, 2005 at the Mission Trails Regional Park Conference Room. It was an interdisciplinary seminar that offered CEU’s and was free to the public.

This event was a collaboration of the County of San Diego HHSA and it’s Indian Specialty Unit, Indian Health Council, Southern Indian Health Council, Indian Child and Family Services, the Santa Ysabel Band of Digueno Indians, and the Tribal STAR Project of the SDSU School of Social Work’s Academy for Professional Excellence. The training targeted managers and supervisors of frontline staff that work with Tribal youth and Tribal communities; and included CASAs, Independent Living Services/Independent Living Programs, Group Homes, Private/Non-Profits, Residential Services, Kinship agencies, as well as attorneys, judges, and probation staff.

Leadership from both Tribal and non-Tribal communities were invited to participate in a positive collaboration, which recognized that improvements need to be made on the SIP, CFSR, C-CFSR, and pending reviews, to insure positive outcomes for Tribal foster youth.

Upcoming Training Opportunities

Tribal STAR is planning a series of trainings for trainers in the year 2007.

Trainings will have a limited capacity, 32 spaces for participants. The limited number allows Tribal STAR to conduct the training in a culturally rich and appropriate manner.

Tribal STAR recommends that those who are planning to attend the Summit or The Gathering, attend a training on the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) prior to participation in the Tribal STAR training. Scheduled ICWA training can be found on the Public Child Welfare Training Academy website: http://theacademy.sdsu.edu.
