CREATING CONNECTION, CULTURE, COMMUNITY, AND RESOURCES FOR TRIBAL YOUTH

SERVICES

Technical Assistance:

Tribal and non-Tribal communities, organizations, and entities are offered technical assistance throughout the 5-year grant period to assist with collaborative partnership development, supporting positive outcomes for Tribal rural foster youth.

Timeline (2003 - 2008):

•  Year 1 - develop a curriculum for supervisors and frontline workers to enhance their competency in working with Tribal rural foster youth.

•  Year 2 - offer training to the rural Native American tribes, as well as Native American child welfare service providers in San Diego and Imperial Counties .

•  Year 3 - offer training in the rural southern regions of California .

•  Year 4 - provide statewide training for trainers in rural areas across the State of California , and continue technical assistance efforts to rural communities that were trained in years 2 and 3.

•  Year 5 - provide modified training to social work students attending accredited California MSW programs.

Training:

The goal of Tribal STAR is to develop and implement a training program to enhance the skills of frontline and supervisory staff, as well as ehnance MSW student's capacity to provide effective child welfare services in rural Native American communities across the State of California. The outcome of the training will be the increase of positive outcomes for rural Tribal foster youth who are transitioning to adulthood.  

The Tribal STAR Gathering curriculum for frontline workers was developed. Training was conducted for the Academy's region comprised of San Diego, Riverside, Orange, San Bernardino, Imperial counties. The training was successful with participants expressing their appreciation for the materials presented. The Gathering is a two day training.

The Tribal STAR Summit curriculum for Managers and Supervisors was also developed. Training was conducted for the region. The Summit is a one day intensive training. The following comments were written by participants in their evaluation: "Absolutely fabulous training! A very welcome, family atmosphere. The time flew by! Also, excellent trainers with a broad range of knowledge". Another said, "Thank you for allowing me to have such a wonderful experience"., And, "Come and develop a program for LA County".
